The annual Sicha Shabbaton in the Mountains takes place each year in August at Wildacres Retreat, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western North Carolina. Our Shabbaton richly confirms one of the primary goals of Sicha: to create conditions within which individuals, regardless of background, are empowered to see themselves as worthy conversation partners with Jewish tradition. In small groups, participants bring their own lived experience into dialogue with Jewish texts that address an annual theme.
The theme for the Sicha Shabbaton 2020 will be A Great Web Of Being. Themes from years past include: Derech Eretz: The Way Of The Earth; May Memory Be a Blessing; DREAMS: Image and Imagination; Doors and Thresholds; Hineini: Here I Am; AMEN: The Final Word In Faith; The Binding of Isaac, Abraham, Sarah and the Rest of Us; Stories of Elijah the Prophet; Amidah: Standing Up for Ourselves; Berachot and Blessings; and Naming Ourselves/God. The Sicha Shabbaton features learning in the company of ritual, song, prayer, and kosher food. We enjoy fine local mountain musical entertainment, clear mountain air and a beautiful setting in which to build community. Click here for a sample of the Shabbaton schedule. The Sicha Shabbaton, attended by Jewish lay and professional leaders from across the region, is a growing resource for Jewish learning and enrichment.
